The hair celebrities wear......in secret!

Background:

For millions of people everywhere who rely on hair extensions for glamorous-yet-manageable hairstyles, a traditional ‘weave’ (the sewing or gluing of wefts or tracks of hair onto the wearer's own hair); or 'bonding' and 'micro bonding' (the gluing of individual strands of hair onto the wearer's own hair); are popular options because they offer more realistic results than other hair extension options. This is because the hair can be attached in such a way to incorporate a real parting into the hairstyle, allowing the wearer to reveal a bit of his/her own scalp and roots, so it looks like all of the hair is growing out of his/her head, adding an extra dimension of realism to the hairstyle. These options
, however, have several disadvantages. They are very:-

  • Time consuming – they literally take hours to put in, and removing them can take even longer! Clip-in hair pieces in particular can become unruly and need replacing within hours…they are so high maintenance!
  • Expensive - because they involve the costs of the labour of having the hair attached (and removed) each time.
  • Expensive again – because the hair is not always re-useable and new hair has to be bought each time. For instance, if the wearer has had his/her weave cut into style, once the hair is removed to remove the style, s/he won’t be able to use the hair again to re-create the same style in the future: s/he would have to buy new hair.
  • Damaging – the hair is sewn, glued or attached in some other way tightly onto the wearer's own hair. These methods of application have been proven to cause significant damage to the wearer's own hair and scalp, making the hair unhealthy and weak. Breakage occurs and growth becomes stunted.
  • Hot – the hair can’t be removed at night to let the wearers' own hair or scalp breathe. This has been proven to be a major contributor to scalp problems and hair deterioration.
  • Itchy – with the scalp hidden under all that hair, there is always itchiness. Another reason why the scalp becomes unhealthy and the roots become damaged when using hair extensions.
  • Tricky to maintain - bonded or micro bonded hair cannot be washed without weakening the glue and having the hair extensions fall out!  With a sewn-in weave, it is also very hard for the wearer to wash his/her own real hair and the attached hair thoroughly, without slackening or damaging the stitching. These can all be a long-term problems because after all the time and expense of having hair extensions put on and styled, the wearer will want to keep them in for as long as possible!
  • Unhygienic - no matter how often the hair is washed, it is hard for shampoo to get through the hair extensions and clean the wearer's own hair and scalp satisfactorily. Hair and scalp damage and significant breakage occurs as a result.

A wig in comparison is:-

  • Quick – it takes seconds to wear and remove.
  • Inexpensive - because it is only paid for once, yet it can be used again and again, even if it has been cut into style. And good wigs can last for years.
  • Flexible – it can be removed at night to let the wearer's own hair and scalp breathe, promoting healthy hair and scalp.
  • A breeze to maintain – once the wig has been removed the wearer's own hair can be loosened anytime for thorough washing, caring and maintenance, encouraging hair health and growth. Of course, the wig itself can be washed without damaging the style.

But existing wigs only deliver a complete head of hair at the expense of realism. Unnecessary fringes, outdated hair bands, plastic-looking fake scalps, enforced partings and suspiciously big hair are used to hide the stitching at the front. And because these features also conceal the wearer’s own roots and hairline, it is apparent that the hair is not really growing out of the head and is therefore fake!

Other wigs, such as ‘half wigs’ and ‘three-quarter wigs’ address this by allowing the wearer to leave out a substantial amount – half and one quarter respectively - of his or her own hair to blend in with the wig hair. However, having to leave out, care for, and style so much of your own hair can defeats the purpose of wearing a wig! And, although when viewed from the front both the half and three-quarter wigs can give the impression that all the hair is real, the side view always tells a different story: it rarely conceals the bump that always arises at the point where the attached hair begins!

'Lace fronts' (full wigs with lace caps that deliberately extend out of the front and sides of the wig, for attachment to the skin by glue), can offer realism when custom-made but are expensive ($3,000+). Many wearers find them itchy and uncomfortable and many more react to the glues used to attach the lace to the forehead. And because they are stuck on for many weeks or months at a time, wearers experience the same maintenance and hygiene problems as weave wearers.

A wig that somehow offers a real parting to reveal the wearer's own scalp is the solution, and this is where the innovative SimiWeave™ comes in. Made to a unique patented design, the SimiWeave™ features a real gap in the hairline, allowing the wearer to include a parting in the hairstyle, thereby revealing a bit of real scalp and roots. Whether the parting is on the left, in the centre, or on the right, it brings unbeatable realism to the hairstyle.

Thanks to it’s real parting, the SimiWeave™ delivers all the benefits of traditional weaves, lace fronts and intricate hair extensions. But because it works like a wig, the SimiWeave™ improves on these other options in so many ways.

  • It only takes a few seconds to put on and take off.
  • You only pay for it once and can use it again and again.
  • The hair is not sewn or glued onto your own hair, scalp or forehead either, to avoid discomfort, headaches, or damage to your own hair and skin.
  • It facilitates healthy hair in so many ways! For instance (i) you can take it off at night to let your own hair and scalp breathe, and wash your own hair as often and as thoroughly as you like, thereby maintaining a healthy scalp for healthy hair and growth; (ii) when you are wearing it, it protects your own hair from the damaging elements, although the cap is aerated and allows air through to your scalp; and (iii) it is designed to be worn with natural hair - no need to use destructive chemicals to relax/straighten your own hair first. (Infrequent heat pressing should be adequate to get your hair to match). No wonder it is loved and recommended by trichologists everywhere!
  • Because of its unique design, there are no bumps or any of the telltale signs you get with half or three-quarter wigs.

It is the first product to truly combine realism with glamour, and convenience with choice, while facilitating healthy hair and growth. It has already changed peoples view on weaves, wigs and lace fronts forever.  This is why so many celebrities are already wearing it in complete secret!

Simi Belo, with her SimiWeave™ invention

Simi Belo,with her SimiWeave™ invention

I'm Simi Belo, and I invented the SimiWeave™ simply because I needed it, desperately! Even though I had been plaiting and weaving my own hair for over twenty-five years, I still hadn’t found the ideal solution to all of my daily hair requirements. I needed something I could use and maintain at home myself. It had to be quick and easy to use and not cause damage to my own hair and scalp. And it had to look real.

I loved the look that could be achieved from traditional weaves, but was totally fed up with all the time, effort and money involved; the headaches and itchiness, and the damage to my scalp and hair. I didn’t like wigs because, as far as I was concerned, you can spot a wig a mile away! Relaxing my hair was not an option – it still hadn’t fully recovered from the last time I used such chemicals, in 1998. And I had accepted a long time ago that I no longer had the time or patience to sit still and have intricate extensions put in, like single plaits or twists.

In 2003, whilst running my successful PR agency Guru PR, I finally managed to develop the SimiWeave™. I launched it under the original name of 'NewHair' in the UK in January 2004.  It was then launched in October 2004 in North America by our exclusive licensee Especially Yours. Availability in mainland Europe, South Africa, west Africa and The Caribbean has followed since.

Industry-leading magazine Black Beauty & Hair predicted in 2004 that the SimiWeave™ was ‘a new invention set to take the hairdressing world by storm’. I am delighted that that prediction came true: the SimiWeave™ has been an overnight success amongst customers, celebrities, retailers, hair and beauty experts, the media and retailers alike! My patented design, my company Imiis and I have already won many awards (see left panel). And to think that I made and wore prototypes of my invention quietly for many, many years, before I took that HUGE plunge to bring it to market!! Despite the trials and tribulations of running a business, I'm happy I took that life-changing leap. And judging by the thanks, praises, compliments, support and encouragement that I receive everyday from people all over the world, I can tell that you are too! All your feedback is very welcome and encouraged, including criticisms or suggestions that allow me to improve our products and services.

But this is just the beginning: I want to use my experience, expertise and position to enable and empower women like me across the world. I want to equip them with the knowledge and confidence to regain, own and direct the industries behind the products and services that we consume the most of, yet do not benefit from the success of, beginning with hair.
